Morlais Marine Licence Variation granted

The Marine Licence Variation at Morlais has now been granted, opening the door for Tidal Technologies to deploy in Welsh waters. Its a privilege to have led the team through this process which marks the final chapter in Juno Energy's 14-year involvement supporting the Morlais Project.

Juno delivered the application, scoping and ES Addendum and managed the multidisciplinary team, aiming to take a proportionate approach with a focus on efficient use of resources. The variation allows for taller devices and larger rotor blades within a new hybrid category of device that is both seabed-mounted and surface emergent.

This process also sets an important precedent. Tidal stream energy continues to evolve and, while the Project Design Envelope provides flexibility, it is essential that consents can accommodate new designs as they emerge to support both the growth of the sector and the long-term sustainability of Morlais.

Thanks to Simon Myers (SLR Consulting), Will Cooke (OWC), Ryan Horrocks and William Heaps (Marico Marine Group), and Paul Maile (Eversheds Sutherland) for their expertise throughout.

We also recognise the constructive engagement of Natural Resources Wales, Isle of Anglesey County Council, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and other consultees.

Finally, thanks to supportive clients Tidal Technologies and Menter Môn Morlais Ltd.

A great re
sult for the project and for tidal energy - We look forward to seeing the deployments that are planned for next year!
